About
Kenodromia — “running in the void.”
What is a void-of-course Moon?
As the Moon travels through a zodiac sign it makes a series of aspects — geometric angles — to the other planets. After it completes its last major aspect in a sign, there's a gap before it crosses into the next sign. During that gap the Moon is void of course.
The Greeks called it kenodromia: the Moon “running in emptiness.” It happens every time the Moon changes sign — roughly every 2–2½ days — and can last anywhere from a couple of minutes to more than a day.
Why track it?
In electional and horary astrology the void Moon carries an old maxim: “nothing will come of the matter.” With the Moon making no further connections, ventures begun during a void are said to drift, stall, or need redoing.
So many people treat it as a natural pause — good for rest, routine, reflection, and finishingwhat's already in motion — and they avoid launching, signing, buying, or deciding until the Moon enters its next sign.
How these times are calculated
Positions are geocentric and tropical(the everyday Western zodiac), computed for the true ecliptic of date. A void begins at the Moon's final exact Ptolemaic aspect and ends at the next sign ingress.
You're using the Modern definition. An aspect to any planet — including Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto — keeps the Moon in course. You can switch this in Settings.
Data & accuracy
Everything is computed on your device with Astronomy Engine — an open-source ephemeris (MIT-licensed) accurate to about an arcminute for the Moon. No paid API or external ephemeris is needed, and it works offline.
Void start times here match published professional tables (e.g. Cafe Astrology) to the minute. Times are shown in your selected time zone.
